“I usually work in series. This is because I like to develop and ‘push’ an idea to see how far I can take it”

Cast Glass

We Love…

Di incorporates people in her pieces in a way that makes you relate - the traveller with his forlorn posture, sitting on his suitcase, arms folded, waiting…Adrift, the person sitting on a bed, adrift in his/her mind or possibly literally adrift on a bed on the water. Who knows….We love how Di incorporates that human element, drawing you into a memory and making you smile, or cringe, and evoking a reaction. That is the purpose of art. ARTFORM.

Feature

Di Tocker studied glass at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia.

Exposed to all aspects of glass making she chose to focus on casting, graduating in 2002 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts – major Glass. She then returned home to NZ and now works from a studio beside her home in Cambridge.

Di talks about her unique cast glass sculptural artworks…

“The grungy process of casting glass requires handling heavy plaster molds, high temperature kilns and diamond polishing gear. Eventually, after many methodical hours, shiny glorious objects emerge; weighty glass sculptures capture the semi-permanent flow of melting lead crystal. There is a calming balance of chaos and control, parading under the shiny exterior of my glass sculptures.

I test and experiment with glass flow aiming to suspend colour mid-stream.  Inspiration is found in people and the forms and atmospheres of nature. I am constantly pushing techniques and ideas with a keen sense of curiosity about “what next”.
