We Love…

Claire’s stunning pieces explore themes of the environment through the most quintessential of New Zealand's leaves and feathers. These are elements that speak to the very identity New Zealand, which a home sick Kiwi may not even realise that they yearn for in that sensation of knowing they are far from home. The assemblages Claire creates from her hand carved and painted pieces they speak to that home. Both peaceful and Impactful, we love them. ARTFORM.

Feature

Originally from Christchurch, I spent my formative years in North Queensland. After some overseas travel I settled back in New Zealand, Ōpunakē, with my family in 2005. My background is in art and education, with particular interest in sculpture and design. I explore themes relating to the environment, consumerism and nature. I prefer to use waste materials including plastic, wood and metal salvaged from beaches and the gleaned from the community to create sculpture and functional design. I have always had concern for the environment. I feel I can contribute positively to the issue of waste by using and revaluing discarded materials in my work, and I consider that I can increase their worth by creating well crafted, timeless pieces with narrative.

Recently I have become more aware of how I may further hone my desire to create with sustainable practice. By consciously using materials and techniques neutral to or with minimal impact upon the environment as much as possible. This learning is ongoing.
