Di Tocker

“I usually work in series. This is because I like to develop and ‘push’ an idea to see how far I can take it”

We Love

Di incorporates people in her pieces in a way that makes you relate - the traveller with his forlorn posture, sitting on his suitcase, arms folded, waiting…Adrift, the person sitting on a bed, adrift in his/her mind or possibly literally adrift on a bed on the water. Who knows….We love how Di incorporates that human element, drawing you into a memory and making you smile, or cringe, and evoking a reaction. That is the purpose of art. ARTFORM.

At Artform…

Feature

Di Tocker is a full-time Glass Artist working from her purpose-built studio in Cambridge. Born in Auckland, 1971 and educated in Tauranga, Di was fortunate to discover her love of glass at the early age of 18. Since then Di has always created works in glass, firstly in lead-light as a hobbyist. This passion led Di to seeking work in the glass field, eventually becoming a designer consultant at a large lead-light manufacturer in Melbourne. Di completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (major Glass) in 2002 at RMIT University in Melbourne – this is where she discovered the method of Lost Wax Casting Glass and started to focus her work on the human form. Now most of Di’s work is focused on the human form, relationships and communication. Di’s work has been selected for the prestigious Australasian Ranamok Glass Prize in 2011 and her work Stick to your Knitting won the Swarbrick Dixon award for Excellence in Glass at Re-Fraction Glass exhibition in 2010. In 2014, Di won first prize and people’s choice awards at Auckland’s Easter Show Art Exhibition for new works from her Rooms series.
