Hollie O’Neill is a contemporary New Zealand artist based in Waikato whose practice explores the transformative relationship between light, colour, reflection and perception.
Her Solar Seduction and Solar Verticals series are rooted in an intuitive response to the landscapes and intense light of Aotearoa. O’Neill takes the feelings and sensations experienced in nature back to the studio, where colour becomes a language through which these impressions are translated into luminous, reflective works.
Working with mirrored surfaces and epoxy polymer, O’Neill creates responsive artworks that shift with light, movement and viewpoint. Since 2007, she has been an early pioneer in using epoxy polymer within contemporary fine art, exploring its capacity to manipulate colour, light and reflection. Reflections draw the surrounding environment into the work, creating an evolving dialogue between artwork, space and viewer.
A full-time artist since 2002, O’Neill has received national recognition through finalist selections in the NZ Painting & Printmaking Award, Parkin Drawing Prize and Academy Prize for Visual Art. In 2024, she received the Eden Park Best in Colour Award. Her work is held in public and private collections in New Zealand and internationally, including The Arts House Trust collection.
