Susan St Lawrence
“My sculpture is expressive narrative and explores the universe of inner stories, landscapes and alter-egos we carry around inside of us. The work is gestural, and always shows evidence of its making and firing. It often incorporates contributions from ceramic friends; a significant emotional element for me. Sculpture allows me to express my artistic visions.”

WE LOVE…
Susan St Lawrence uses her vessels as her canvas, creating stories, fairy tales and messages in her sculptures. They take on a different meaning when reading the titles:’Lord Percy’s Fancy’, ‘Alchemy of Life’ and ‘Waiting for Carnival’. With detailed of hand-built ceramics, to firing, glazing and then painting with more firing - these vessels are a labour of love which we are proud to welcome to Artform. ARTFORM.

“My ceramic practise takes four avenues: narrative sculpture, collaborative art projects with Small Stories and other art groups, exhibition curation, teaching.
Each path is important to me for different reasons. My sculpture is expressive narrative and explores the universe of inner stories, landscapes and alter-egos we carry around inside of us. The work is gestural, and always shows evidence of its making and firing. It often incorporates contributions from ceramic friends; a significant emotional element for me. Sculpture allows me to express my artistic visions.
It is important for my work to have a destination. If there are no projects on the horizon, I usually create one by curating a group show that challenges the participants into exploring their artistic life in a new way. My teaching allows me to contribute back to the community. People are drawn to work with clay for a variety of reasons - creative emotional, physical. Clay allows creative expression other mediums don't, engenders a sense of play sometimes forgotten in our busy lives, and heals in ways not often recognised in medical journals.”
