Rere Marama

Rimu, Charred timber, Oil, wax

'Rere Marama' represents an upward flight path of longing and learning. The feathers form the shape of the moon (te Marama) while a softly edged star is seen in the empty white space, - being both symbolic of ‘reaching for the star’ as the flight continues. The Karearea (NZ’s only native falcon) is represented in each feather by the burnt and blackened stripes, - referencing strength, independence and determination. These underpinning ideas are further strengthened by the feather forms being sculpted from strong and remarkable reclaimed rimu from the Christchurch quakes.
