Mixed media by Shane Dudley

Shane Dudley’s signature pieces draw on his family’s Pakeha and Maori background. Every piece Shane creates combines the history of the two cultures. Shane's background in hand-applied sign-writing and specialist concrete crafting complements his work as he uses cement and coloured oxides as a mixed media to create a unique texture which he then overlays onto his Hardie's board canvas. This refined technique allows him to mimic stone without the weight. All of Shane's creations are large, easily hung statement pieces held in corporate settings and private collections worldwide.

Starting from the top down, the binding represents 2 cultures meeting/crossing/immersing.

The rusting aging steel with riveted plates and fading Maori design, symbolizes the British influence and the near successful attempt at stamping out Te Reo (The Language).

The bone finish bladein the middle with the bold Maori design, symbolizing the now strong comeback of the reo.

 The Adze ( Toki ) is now given/received as a treasured gift and is a symbol of respect and mana.”
