Cement and coloured oxides, metal by Shane Dudley

Shane Dudley has drawn from his family’s Māori and Pākehā background to create this cross-cultural

masterpiece.

Whakahaumaru: “To safeguard and protect.”

A mother whale is protecting her three babies. The mother is on the left, the father is on the right. The compass represents not just the actual compass but the moral compass to guide us where we need to go. Porowhita translates to “circle of life; the never-ending circle of life and Nature.”

Whakahaumaru is a stunning example of Shane’s specialized process in which he mixes cement and coloured oxides to create a stone-like finish (without the weight of real stone).
