When my children were growing up I was a teacher aide at the local school and worked on the rainbow reading programme.I’ve never forgotten how many of the stories were related to how to care for various animals - Guinea pigs, rabbits and the like. I realised these simple stories were a way to teach children what was needed to keep a creature alive. Actively providing shelter, food and water is how we teach children to sustain and respect life and this was at grass roots level. The ability to empathise is such an important lesson for children. A found rabbit asks questions about how it should be treated.
